Question 1

How does the inspection requirement differ between Copper Ore listings and Titanium Ore listings?

Accepted Answer

Inspection for Copper Ore focuses heavily on elemental composition and moisture content, which directly impacts the smelting yield and final price. Titanium Ore requires similar assay verification but often carries stricter limits on impurities that affect titanium extraction efficiency. Buyers must request the specific assay report for each lot, as the acceptable grade thresholds for these two ores are not interchangeable.

Question 2

What is the primary logistical difference when shipping Sea Sand versus Nickel Ore?

Accepted Answer

Shipping Sea Sand involves managing high moisture content to prevent liquefaction during transit, which requires specific stowage and dewatering protocols. Nickel Ore, while also a bulk mineral, has different density and handling characteristics that influence how it is loaded and secured. The packing and stowage requirements for these two materials are distinct, affecting the choice of vessel and loading method.

Question 3

Why is a mill certificate essential for Metal & Metal Products but not for Ores and Minerals?

Accepted Answer

Mill certificates verify the chemical composition, mechanical properties, and dimensional tolerances of fabricated metal items, which are critical for engineering applications. Ores and Minerals rely on assay reports that measure elemental content rather than physical dimensions or mechanical strength. Using a mill certificate for raw ore data is irrelevant, and using an assay report for metal products is insufficient.

Question 4

What mistake occurs when sourcing from the wrong sub-category on this page?

Accepted Answer

Sourcing raw ore from the Metal & Metal Products branch leads to receiving quotes for fabricated items that cannot be used for extraction. Conversely, looking for structural steel in the Ores and Minerals branch results in irrelevant listings for raw materials. The two branches serve entirely different supply chains, and mixing them up wastes time and generates incomparable quotes.

Question 5

How do export paperwork requirements differ for minerals leaving Hong Kong compared to metal products?

Accepted Answer

Minerals often require specific export permits and assay documentation to prove origin and content for customs and destination regulations. Metal products typically rely on commercial invoices, packing lists, and mill certificates that confirm quality and quantity. The paper trail for raw extraction is more regulated due to environmental and resource controls, whereas processed metals follow standard trade documentation.

Question 6

What specific detail is often missing from listings for Titanium Ore that a buyer must verify?

Accepted Answer

Listings for Titanium Ore frequently omit the exact grade of titanium dioxide content and the presence of deleterious elements like chromium or vanadium. These impurities significantly affect the processing cost and final usability of the ore. Buyers must request a detailed assay report to confirm the specific elemental composition before considering a quote.

Question 7

How does the packing method for Marine Sand differ from that of Copper Ore?

Accepted Answer

Marine Sand is typically shipped in bulk using specialized dredgers or grab vessels, with moisture management being the primary concern during loading. Copper Ore is also shipped in bulk but requires careful attention to particle size distribution to prevent segregation and ensure stable loading. The physical handling and stowage requirements for these two materials are distinct, affecting the logistics cost and safety protocols.
