Question 1

How does the CAS registry number distinguish Dimethyl Sulfoxide grades from Dimethyl Sulfide?

Accepted Answer

The CAS number is the unique identifier that separates these two distinct chemical substances. Dimethyl Sulfoxide and Dimethyl Sulfide share similar names but have different chemical structures, hazards, and applications. Buyers must verify the CAS number on the listing to ensure they are sourcing the correct compound. Using the wrong CAS number leads to incorrect safety handling and potential regulatory rejection at the destination port.

Question 2

Why does the impurity profile matter more than the assay percentage for industrial buyers?

Accepted Answer

The assay percentage tells you the main component content, but the impurity profile reveals trace elements that can poison catalysts or affect product color. Industrial processes often have strict tolerance limits for sulfur, water, or heavy metals. A high assay percentage is useless if the impurity profile exceeds the technical grade specifications required for your manufacturing line.

Question 3

What makes a safety data sheet invalid for clearing Non Metallic Elements in Europe?

Accepted Answer

A safety data sheet is invalid if it does not follow the REACH-compliant format required by the destination country. It must accurately reflect the UN number and packing group for the specific chemical mixture. If the sheet omits hazard statements or does not list the registrant details, customs authorities will reject the entry regardless of the product quality.

Question 4

How do UN numbers and packing groups affect which vessels accept your booking?

Accepted Answer

The UN number classifies the hazard type, while the packing group indicates the degree of danger. Some vessels have restrictions on carrying certain packing groups in specific deck or hold areas. If the booking does not match the vessel's hazardous cargo certification, the shipping line will refuse the container, causing significant delays and rebooking fees.

Question 5

Why do quotes for Silicon wafers expire faster than bulk chemical quotes?

Accepted Answer

Silicon wafers are high-value, precision-manufactured items where feedstock costs and yield rates fluctuate daily. The manufacturing capacity is often fully booked, leaving little room for price negotiation. Unlike bulk commodities where prices adjust slowly, wafer prices react quickly to energy costs and silicon ingot availability, making quotes stale within days.

Question 6

Does the choice between drum and ISO tank change the hazard class of the chemical?

Accepted Answer

The hazard class is determined by the chemical's physical and chemical properties, not the packaging. However, the packaging must be approved for that specific hazard class and packing group. An ISO tank may be required for large volumes of corrosive or flammable liquids, while drums suit smaller quantities. The packaging choice affects freight cost but does not alter the underlying hazard classification.

Question 7

What specific information must appear on the dangerous goods declaration for Silicon Sealants?

Accepted Answer

The declaration must list the UN number, proper shipping name, hazard class, packing group, and total net quantity. It must also specify the number of packages and the type of packaging used. For Silicon Sealants, the flash point and flammability characteristics must be clearly stated to ensure safe handling during transport and storage at the destination.
