Question 1

How does the grading count per bunch affect the usable yield for florists?

Accepted Answer

The grading count determines how many stems are in one standard unit. A lower count means longer stems but fewer units per kilogram, which changes the cost per stem for the end user. Buyers must calculate the yield based on the count stated in the listing, not the total weight, to ensure the landed cost per stem meets their margin targets. Different varieties have different standard counts, so direct weight comparisons are misleading.

Question 2

What specific details must the phytosanitary certificate include to avoid interception?

Accepted Answer

The certificate must list the scientific name of the variety and confirm inspection for specific pests required by the destination country. If the destination has rules for particular soil-borne pathogens or insect vectors, the certificate must explicitly state they were checked and found absent. Generic statements about being pest-free are often rejected by customs, leading to quarantine or destruction of the shipment.

Question 3

Why is the bloom stage at cut critical for vase life calculations?

Accepted Answer

The bloom stage at cut dictates how much time remains before the flower opens fully or wilts. A listing that specifies buds will have a longer vase life in transit than one specifying open blooms. Buyers must match the bloom stage to their retail timeline, as open flowers may arrive past their prime if the air freight takes longer than expected. This detail is essential for accurate inventory planning.

Question 4

How does the unbroken cold chain impact the final price of the shipment?

Accepted Answer

Maintaining the cold chain requires specialized air freight with temperature control, which is significantly more expensive than standard cargo. If a seller offers a low unit price but uses standard freight, the risk of spoilage is high, and the effective cost of rejected goods will be much higher. Buyers must factor in the premium for cold chain logistics to ensure the product arrives in sellable condition.

Question 5

What is the difference between Resin products and Herbal Plants in sourcing?

Accepted Answer

Resin products are processed extracts or solidified materials that do not require live plant quarantine or phytosanitary certificates for most destinations. Herbal Plants, including roots and tissues, are biological materials that face strict pest interception risks and require detailed inspection. The compliance burden and paperwork for Herbal Plants are significantly higher, affecting both lead time and landed cost.

Question 6

How does variety selection influence the phytosanitary requirements for the shipment?

Accepted Answer

Certain varieties are listed as high-risk for specific pests in destination countries, triggering additional testing or treatment before export. The seller must know the destination's plant-health rules for that specific variety to provide a valid phytosanitary certificate. If the listing does not specify the variety, the buyer cannot verify if the shipment will clear customs, making the quote unreliable.

Question 7

What happens if the stem length varies from the listed grade?

Accepted Answer

If the shipped stems are shorter than the grade stated, the visual impact and vase life are reduced, making the product unsuitable for high-end retail. Buyers should inspect the sample or request a pre-shipment photo verification of the stem length. Discrepancies in stem length are a common reason for claims, as this is the primary metric for quality grading in this trade.
