Question 1

How do I distinguish between a scrap metal listing and a mineral ore listing in the search results?

Accepted Answer

The distinction lies in the sub-category selected by the seller. A scrap metal listing falls under Metal & Metal Products and describes a processed industrial by-product. An ore listing sits under Ores and Minerals and describes a raw geological extract. Check the sub-category header to confirm the material state, as the physical handling and inspection requirements are completely different between these two branches.

Question 2

What specification is missing from a typical PMMA offcuts listing that I must ask for?

Accepted Answer

Most listings for PMMA offcuts or strip fail to state the optical clarity grade or the UV stability rating. Without this information, you cannot determine if the material suits extrusion or injection molding. Ask the seller for the specific polymer grade or the manufacturer's data sheet that confirms the material properties before you request a price.

Question 3

Why does a DCOCC scrap listing lack the moisture content details found in other paper grades?

Accepted Answer

DCOCC, or Double Wall Corrugated Container, scrap is often sold by weight without precise moisture control because it is typically recycled directly. Unlike higher-grade paper grades, it does not require strict moisture limits for immediate reuse in certain applications. However, you should still confirm the dry weight percentage to ensure you are paying for actual fiber content rather than water weight.

Question 4

What transport constraint affects mineral shipments leaving Austria more than metal products?

Accepted Answer

Mineral shipments often require specialized rail wagons or sealed containers to prevent dust contamination during overland transit. Metal products, such as coils or sheets, can be shipped in standard open-top containers or bulk rail cars. Verify the packing method with the seller, as improper securing of raw minerals can lead to significant loss during the long rail journey to ports.

Question 5

How does the origin of PET bottle scrap influence the inspection requirements?

Accepted Answer

PET bottle scrap from Austria often carries specific European recycling standards that buyers must verify against their local regulations. The contamination level, particularly the presence of non-PET labels or adhesives, varies by source. Request a sample analysis of the inert material content to ensure the scrap meets your recycling plant's intake specifications.

Question 6

What is the primary risk when comparing quotes for scrap PET bales versus raw ore?

Accepted Answer

The primary risk is confusing the unit of measurement and the purity level. Scrap PET bales are priced by weight of clean plastic, while ore is priced by weight of raw rock with varying metal content. A low price for ore may reflect high impurities, while a high price for PET may reflect low contamination. Always compare quotes based on the recoverable material content, not just the gross weight.

Question 7

Why is the condition of PMMA offcuts critical for its final application?

Accepted Answer

PMMA offcuts are often sourced for secondary extrusion or machining, where surface defects can ruin the final product. Scratches, yellowing, or internal stresses in the offcuts will lead to high rejection rates in production. Inspect the surface quality and check for any thermal degradation signs in the listing photos or through a detailed description from the seller.
