The substance is strongly hygroscopic, readily deliquesces in air, and dissolves in water with significant heat release. Its aqueous solution is slightly acidic. It also dissolves in alcohol, acetone, and acetic acid, and forms complexes with ammonia and ethanol. On heating, it transitions through hydrated forms to become anhydrous calcium chloride at 260°C. Stated uses include snow and ice melting on roads, highways, parking lots, and docks; drying gases such as nitrogen, oxygen, hydrogen, hydrogen chloride, and sulfur dioxide; acting as a dehydrating agent in the production of alcohol, esters, ethers, and acrylic resins; serving as a refrigerant brine for refrigeration and ice-making; accelerating concrete setting and improving cold resistance of construction mortar; functioning as a port anti-fog agent, road dust suppressant, and fire retardant; and serving as a preservative and refining agent in aluminum-magnesium metallurgy and as a precipitant in lake pigment production.
