These ventilated constriction clutches are designed for brake and clutch applications where large inertia loads and sustained slippage would normally result in loss of torque and reduced operating life. Torque is transmitted by torque bars rather than the sidewalls of the actuating tube, which sits loose inside a housing formed by a rim and two replaceable side plates. The torque bars are held by the side plates crossing through cavities in the aluminus brake shoes. Pressurizing the air tube forces the shoes to engage a cylindrical drum, and release springs in the torque-bar cavities retract the shoes when pressure is released.
